  • Tseung Kwan O (TKO) — the dominant cluster, holding roughly a third of Hong Kong's existing data center floor space. The following operators have a genuine, verifiable presence in Hong Kong as of 2026. Facility counts, exact capacity figures and certification claims change as providers expand, so treat anything below as a starting point for your own due diligence, not a final answer — always confirm current specifications directly with the provider before signing anything.

  • Equinix operates a cluster of IBX data centers across Hong Kong, with HK1, HK2, HK3 and its newest facility, HK6, concentrated in Tsuen Wan, and HK5 in Tseung Kwan O. HK6 is a newly launched AI-ready facility that Equinix has positioned around direct connectivity into the Hong Kong–Shenzhen innovation corridor, part of the company's broader push toward high-density, AI-capable colocation in the region.
  • Global Switch runs a large facility in the Tseung Kwan O Industrial Estate, positioned near the Hong Kong Stock Exchange with connectivity to the city's main business districts.   • NTT operates its Financial Data Center (FDC) campus in Tseung Kwan O, comprising the FDC1 building (opened 2013) and a second building, FDC2. NTT's FDC1 has been awarded Tier IV design certification by the Uptime Institute — independently verifiable on the Uptime Institute's own award registry — and was the first facility in Hong Kong to receive it; the campus also holds LEED Gold certification for its building design.

  • OneAsia Network operates a colocation facility in Kowloon Bay, reported at roughly 151,000 square feet across a six-story retrofit building, supporting a reported 2,000-plus racks with carrier-neutral connectivity and a stated minimum of N+1 resilience on core systems, upgradable to 2N on request.
  • Vantage Data Centers entered the Hong Kong market via a Tsuen Wan West facility acquired from PCCW, planned to scale toward roughly 48MW of IT capacity across modular data halls, and has since added Kwai Chung and Shatin/Fo Tan locations as part of its Hong Kong portfolio.

Tier III vs Tier IV: What the Certification Actually Means

You'll hear "Tier III" and "Tier IV" used loosely in provider marketing, so it's worth being precise about what the Uptime Institute — the organisation that actually defines and certifies these tiers — means by each. A Tier III facility is concurrently maintainable: it has enough redundant capacity and distribution paths that any single piece of equipment can be taken offline for maintenance without disrupting operations, but it is not necessarily fault-tolerant against every kind of unplanned failure. A Tier IV facility adds fault tolerance: the design has no single point of failure across the entire electrical and mechanical path, so even an unplanned equipment failure should not bring the facility down. Tier IV is materially more expensive to build and operate, which is why it's typically reserved for financial-sector and other mission-critical deployments rather than general-purpose colocation.

Two nuances matter when you're comparing providers. First, design certification is not the same as constructed-facility certification — a facility can be Tier IV *design*-certified (meaning its blueprints meet the standard) well before, or even without ever completing, the separate constructed-facility certification that verifies the building was actually built to that design. Ask specifically which certification a provider holds, for which building, and confirm the certificate date. Second, TIA-942 is a different standard body from the Uptime Institute, with its own "Rated" tier system (Rated 1 through Rated 4) that is sometimes discussed alongside Uptime's Tiers because the concepts are similar, but the two certifications are not interchangeable or automatically equivalent — a "Rated 4" claim under TIA-942 is not the same statement as an Uptime Institute Tier IV certification, even though both describe a highly fault-tolerant facility. When a provider's marketing cites a tier or rating, ask which body certified it and ask to see the certificate.

Connectivity and Carrier Neutrality: Why It Matters

A data center's usefulness depends heavily on what networks you can reach from inside it. Carrier neutrality means the facility allows multiple, competing network carriers, cloud providers and internet exchanges to operate within it, so tenants can choose and mix connectivity rather than being locked into a single carrier's pricing and routes. Hong Kong's major facilities are generally positioned as carrier-neutral interconnection points precisely because of the city's role as a regional cable-landing and peering hub — this is part of what makes Chai Wan's MEGA-i and several Tsuen Wan facilities attractive to telcos and ISPs specifically, beyond their value as pure colocation space. Before committing to a facility, confirm which specific carriers and cloud on-ramps are actually present on-site (a marketing claim of "50+ carriers" available somewhere in the building is different from your specific suite having cross-connect access to the carriers you actually need), what cross-connect pricing looks like, and whether the facility offers direct, low-latency connectivity to the cloud regions and mainland China connectivity points your business depends on.

What to Check Before You Choose a Hong Kong Data Center

Shortlisting a facility on district and brand name alone is a common and avoidable mistake. Work through this checklist with any provider before you sign:

  • Confirm the actual tier certification, the certifying body, and the certificate date — don't accept "Tier IV-ready" or "designed to Tier IV standards" as equivalent to an actual Uptime Institute or TIA-942 certificate; ask to see it.
  • Ask exactly which building and floor your capacity will sit in — some operators run multiple buildings under one brand name with materially different specifications.
  • Verify power capacity and redundancy configuration (N+1 vs 2N) for your specific suite, not just the campus-wide headline figure.
  • Confirm carrier-neutral status and get a current list of on-site network providers and cloud on-ramps relevant to your business.
  • Check physical security and access-control procedures — biometric access, visitor escort policy, and CCTV retention periods should all be documented, not assumed.
  • Ask about grid-connection headroom for future expansion — Hong Kong's grid-connection queues have become a real constraint in some districts, and a facility that's full today may not be able to grow with you tomorrow.
  • Confirm what remote-hands and onsite support the facility itself provides versus what you'll need to arrange separately — colocation space is not the same as a managed service, and most facilities offer only limited remote-hands support of their own.
